So much has happened since my last post! One super exciting thing is that we finally have internet service at our house. I have used up a ridiculous amount of data over the last 5 months trying to get blog posts written via mobile hotspot. Now my only problem is making the time to sit down and write.
Last weekend, my husband and the kids had to run to the store for something, and what do you know, they came home with chicks. A whole box of chicks. In all honesty, I couldn’t find it in me to be upset about it (I’m not really into surprises). I thought we were going to wait a little bit before getting any chicks, but it’s awfully hard to be angry about being handed a pile of soft fluffy chicken babies.
The previous owners built a coop/enclosure on the property. It was (ehhh… still is) a little dilapidated, but Calvin helped fix the biggest issues, and I’ve been working on tidying it up to get everything all set for the chickens to live in it. They still have several weeks before they’re ready, which is just as well because it needs another couple hours’ worth of work. It’s located at the edge of the woods, so while all the shade is nice, it’s gotten way overgrown. Clearly it’s been a while since anything lived in it.
This whole summer, and our move to Tennessee in general, has taught me that there is never a “good” or “right” time. Moving, switching jobs, starting a blog, getting chickens, whatever it may be, there’s never a perfect time to do things. All we have is right now, and if you sit around waiting for the ideal opportunity to present itself, you’re going to miss out on a lot of adventures. So in the spring, when we’re eating fresh eggs every day, I’m pretty sure we’re going to be glad we didn’t wait to get our chicks.
