Last fall, a friend told me about Tennessee Tree Day. It’s an annual event that’s held statewide to encourage Tennesseans to plant native tree species on their property. Since we’ve been clearing all the old stumps from our yard, it’s been easy to see where it would be nice to have new trees.
I was immediately interested in this event because buying trees was intimidating to me. Some species can be so expensive to purchase at a nursery. And if you need more than a few, it’s quite an investment. (Especially for a newbie gardener such as myself, when there’s a high risk of me killing it through lack of experience.) When purchasing saplings through the Tennessee Tree Day event, it was much more affordable.
So back in January, we reserved 20 trees. This past weekend was the pickup day, so we went and got our little bare-root saplings.
We got 5 wild plum, 5 red mulberry, 7 bald cypress, and 3 pecan trees. I did some research on them beforehand so I could figure out the ideal places to plant the different varieties.
I have to say, I’m most excited about the bald cypresses. We planted those way out near the edge of our property line, so if they grow to 70 feet tall someday, they aren’t near any buildings. We can also enjoy the way they look without having to clean up any needles or seed cones.
This year is going to be spent giving all these little saplings a lot of TLC. It’s exciting to imagine how pretty they’ll be a few years from now. It’s just another small step in making this beautiful property our very own.
If you live in Tennessee, be sure to check out this awesome event and share the word with friends!
Just a little jealous. We buy one tree a year lol
Petition your governor to start this in NY! 😉
Kids and trees growing up together!
