I’m so happy to report that Ethel’s two piglets are alive and well. They’re over three weeks old now, and growing like crazy.
Since we’re fairly certain that genetics caused all the issues with our piglets, we decided it would be safer not to use these two for breeding. So once they’re weaned, they’ll go in their own pen and we will raise them as our next feeders.
Introducing Ed….
The boy piglet’s fuzzy red hair quickly earned him the name “Ed Squealin”, after another famous redhead we all know. He’s already a very handsome pig at just 3 weeks old, with his nice coloring, wattles, and size. It’s kind of a shame we can’t use him for breeding. (He’s already castrated, though, so there’s no turning back!)
…and Poppy!
Our older kids decided to name the girl “Poppy”. She’s a little lighter in color and doesn’t have wattles. Poppy is super sweet, and she loves (for now) being held like a baby and rocked to sleep. Lately it seems like I’ve either had a baby or a piglet in my arms for the majority of the day. Can’t complain about that, really.
It’s fun having the piglets in our mix of animals. They’re so stinking cute, with their squeaky squeals and playful mannerisms. I’m really thankful that even though we lost so many piglets, and it was a rough month of dealing with the sows’ labors, we at least got these two out of it.
Anyway, I need to go snuggle a piglet now. I’ll be in the barn if anyone needs me.
Such sweeties! 🥰
