Good news first. We opened the chicken coop in the morning and found our first two perfect little eggs sitting in one of the nesting boxes!
The kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. Their excitement was absolutely adorable to watch. My daughter, ever the skeptic, asked if they were real. My oldest son was fascinated by the fact that we don’t need to refrigerate them.
It was such a rewarding feeling to finally see the first fruits of our labor after caring for the chickens for almost 6 months.
Aren’t they cute?! We even found a third one in the afternoon.
Then, unfortunately, one of our chickens was killed by our friend’s dog last night. Any loss is hard, but it was more annoying than anything because it could have been prevented. (Our chickens weren’t free-range last time said dog visited.) It was a bit of a disappointing end to the evening. But thankfully it wasn’t more than one, and the rest are fine.
I guess that’s just the ups and downs of homestead life. Hopefully the weekend can only get better from here, right? Just gotta keep on truckin’.
