Because we don’t have enough going on with 4 kids, homeschooling, 31 chickens, 2 feeder pigs, 4 breeder pigs, and hopefully piglets any day now… we added another endeavor to our homestead.
A couple days ago we brought home… meat chickens! A lot of meat chickens.
We’ve had laying hens for a while, but now we’re venturing into the world of meat chickens. (Several friends are going in on it with us!) We’re all just getting a little grossed out by store-bought chicken and its mystery ingredients.
We already have farm-fresh eggs, pork from our pigs, locally-sourced beef whenever we can, and now we’ll have fresh chicken as well. Homesteading is delicious.
Calvin built a super-duper brooder in the barn for them to use while they’re itty bitty. Once they’re a tad bigger, we’ll transfer them to the veggie garden. The goal is for them to clean up all the weeds in the garden, fertilizing it as they go.
As my readers know at this point, I’m really not into chickens. They’re honestly one of my least favorite animals. But knowing what we’re feeding our families and putting into our bodies is important, so here we are.
So many chickens lol
